RENT-A-CROWD? CROWDFUNDING ACADEMIC RESEARCH

BY Rebecca English,   Web 2.0 fundamentally shifts the nature of academic work. While there has been some research into the relationship between academics and students in Web 2.0 spaces, especially around Facebook (cf., English and Duncan–Howell, 2008; Madge, et al., 2009; English and Duncan–Howell, 2011) and teaching and assessment (cf., Greenhow, et al., 2009; Pierce, et al., 2011; Richardson, et al., 2012) there is limited research into the implications of new technologies on academic research work, especially in relation to funding. As noted by Pierce, et al. (2011), “the role of computing and the ability to both generate and analyse unprecedented amounts of data has significantly remoulded many arenas of…

TubeStart Announces Royalty Crowdfunding for Digital Video Content Creators

TubeStart, the only crowdfunding platform dedicated to YouTube content creators, announced this week that the company plans to roll out royalty-based crowdfunding to its users pending implementation of Title III (i.e., unaccredited) crowdfunding rules by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Already a leader in subscription-based crowdfunding solutions for digital video creators, TubeStart will pioneer the royalty-based crowdfunding model, allowing everyday Americans to invest in the entertainment projects they love and realize a financial return. CraftFund Launches First Phase of Crowdfunding Platform

CraftFund LLC announced breweries and food companies can now create basic profile pages on its site as it continues to build out its equity crowdfunding platform in anticipation of changing laws on the federal and state levels. The profile page contains general product and brand information. There is no cost to create a basic public profile and creating a profile does not commit a company to ever raising funds on CraftFund. CraftFund founder David Dupee says that the company profile page is the first of several updates to the site scheduled over next few months. “Just as beer and food companies carefully hand craft their…

CFPA applauds SEC’s approval of Title II JOBS ACT crowdfunding provisions

SEC lifts Ban on General Solicitation for Private Placements in 4-1 Vote WASHINGTON, July 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Equity-based crowdfunding came one step closer to actualization Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission voting 4-to-1 in favor of lifting the ban on general solicitation of private placements to accredited investors. The SEC ruling will create a new kind of offering–a 506(c). This allows private companies and investment firms to advertise private securities offerings to accredited investors only. The SEC is still working on proposed rules for Title III, which will enable the general public to participate in equity crowdfunding. “We applaud the commission’s progress on…

Fundable Infographic: Explanation of SEC Announcement & What that means for startups and entrepreneurs

July 10th, 2013 was a monumental day for Fundable and startups across the country. The SEC announced that the ban on general solicitation has been removed for small businesses seeking startup capital, allowing for sweeping changes in the way businesses find funding. This announcement is a productive step forward to fully enact the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act) passed in early April of 2012. With general solicitation now permitted, startups have the opportunity raise money from a wider range of investors – potentially accelerating their funding. With the SEC’s recent announcements, we’ve gotten an outpouring of questions about the JOBS Act, and what it…

SEC To Rule on JOBS Act July 10th

NEW YORK (TheStreet) –The JumpStart Our Businesses Act, or JOBS Act, needs a jumpstart itself. Progress, however, finally seems to be happening as the SEC is scheduled to hold an open meeting on July 10 to vote on the Title 2 portion of the Act. It isn’t the crowdfunding portion that many are anxiously awaiting, but it is a sign of action which is giving the crowdfunding crowd a feeling of hope. Title 2 was supposed to be completed 90 days after the enactment of the JOBs Act, but has only gone so far as a set of proposed rules dating back to August of…
