Real-estate crowdfunding firm takes first bite of Philly market

Real-estate crowdfunding firm takes first bite of Philly market

MANAYUNKA vacant commercial property in Manayunk will soon serve as the staging ground for a new co-working venture. Brothers Simon and Adam Rogers are using 4120 Main St., the former home of Restoration Hardware, to launch the Transfer Station. The pair’s lease at the 8,500 square-foot building began Oct. 1. “It feels incredible to walk in and say, ‘This is where we’re going to make it happen,'” said Simon Rogers. The pop-up operation, which will be referred to as Transfer Station East, will closely mirror what the two hope will permanently occupy another Manayunk property less than a mile away. The temporary space will feature,…

Ayn Rand Would Have Loved Kickstarter

Ayn Rand Would Have Loved Kickstarter

What does it mean that the makers of the final installment of a three-part film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s controversial 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged are asking for donations at the crowdfunding site Kickstarter? Isn’t that the book where characters pledge to “never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine”? To critics of the first two movies in the trilogy (released in 2010 and 2011) and of Rand’s stridently individualistic philosophy, it’s just the latest indicator that the author of The Virtue of Selfishness and her fans are obnoxious hypocrites. “Ayn Rand Movie Producers Beg for Money,” reads…

How to Crowdfund a Million Dollar Arts Project

How to Crowdfund a Million Dollar Arts Project

I was sad to note on Monday that, with 14 days to go, the New York City Opera had raised less than 10 percent of its ambitious $1 million target on Kickstarter. The “People’s Opera” has struggled in recent years. It closed its doors in 2008 for a refurbishment that coincided with the Financial Crisis, and has struggled to make ends meet since then. Organizers describe the crowdfunding campaign as “urgent,” but it is only a slice of a larger call for $7 million by the end of September. If the overall campaign fails, the 70-year-old Opera will suspend its program after the first opera of the season, Anna Nicole.…

Dr. Twilight And The Wonderful World Of Crowdfunding

Dr. Twilight And The Wonderful World Of Crowdfunding

Andrew Ardizzi writes for Bleeding Cool: Crowdfunding campaigns mean everything to independent creators, and there are an incalculable number of great ideas, great stories and great comics waiting to be made. Kickstarter-type campaigns are a wonderful, energizing and completely exhausting undertaking. From the outset you feel enthusiasm, excitement, confidence. Then you get your first couple of contributions and all of a sudden you’re soaring upwards to cloud 9, maybe flying beyond in some sort of Icarian quest to take your project as far it can go. The sky’s the limit. And then the contributions dry up, and after a few days it’s disheartening and energy-sapping.…

Lady Gaga strips down naked for Marina Abramovic’s Kickstarter art project

Lady Gaga strips down naked for Marina Abramovic’s Kickstarter art project

Lady Gaga stars in ‘The Abramovic Method Practiced by Lady Gaga’ – a Kickstarter video to support the Marina Abramovic Institute. Lady Gaga has left absolutely nothing to the imagination. The monster matriarch goes full frontal in a performance art video to fund the Marina Abramovic Institute. In a video to promote a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the Marina Abramovic Institute, the 27-year-old “Born This Way” singer usually known for her bizarre ensembles can be seen completely stripped down to her birthday suit. In the clip, Gaga is on a “three-day retreat in upstate New York” with performance artist Marina Abramovic in which she practices…

Not surprisingly Kickstarter raises more money for artists than the NEA

Not surprisingly Kickstarter raises more money for artists than the NEA

During a session at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Aspen Institute president Walter Isaacson asked Perry Chen, founder of Kickstarter, whether it was true that Kickstarter now funds more arts-related projects than the National Endowment for the Arts. The crowdfunding site has, Chen told Isaacson, funded over $600 million in arts projects. “And,” said Isaacson, “that might be now more than the federal government spent on the arts in a given year?” adding a bit later that “in some ways… you’ve invented something that does what the NEA used to do and can’t quite do now.” Indeed, people have been saying since last year that Kickstarter funds more…

Crowdfunding Culture: Namaste, and Welcome to the Smithsonian

Crowdfunding Culture: Namaste, and Welcome to the Smithsonian

This Monday, the Smithsonian was scheduled to wrap up the biggest crowdfunding campaign ever undertaken by an American museum. The subject of the exhibition in question? Yoga. At the time of this writing, the Freer Sackler Galleries have decided to extend their month-long campaign another week, and have already surpassed their $125,000 goal by over $4,000. Clearly, this is one show the population of D.C. will pay to see. As a spokeswoman said, “There are between 20 and 40 million yoga practitioners in the United States, and an ethos of community that already surrounds yoga. If ever there were a time for us to try…
