Dark Snow Project’s Crowdfunded Climate Science Experiment

Jason Box at a weather station on Greenland's dark snow. Photo: Hughie Balfour Paul

By: Mary Catherine O’Connor Everything is connected; a catastrophic weather event in one hemisphere can have ripple effects on the other side of the globe. That is no news to climate scientists. But last summer, as the United States was in the throes of one of its worst wildfire seasons on record, climate scientist Jason Box, who studies Greenland’s ice sheet, wondered about a direct link between those fires and the frightening speed at which the ice sheet was melting. Among the fires last summer were large tundra blazes in Alaska and Canada. Box used weather analysis and computer models to show that smoke from…

Crowdfunding awaits key rules from SEC

Security and Exchange Commission

Congress created equity crowdfunding, but the Securities and Exchange Commission holds the infant industry’s life in its hands. The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, passed almost a year ago, will let privately held companies sell up to $1 million a year in unregistered stock to mom-and-pop investors using the Internet and social media. But they can’t start until the SEC completes the regulations. The SEC missed its Dec. 31 deadline for publishing the regulations. Given its backlog of rule-making and the fact that its new chairman hasn’t been confirmed, it could be next year before a rule takes effect. SEC spokesman John Nester would only…

Crowdfunding: New way to raise money for health needs

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — People faced with soaring healthcare costs have looked for help before. Now they’ve found another possible solution online. Thousands are sharing their stories on websites in what is known as crowdfunding. It’s the latest online evolution connecting individuals who are in need, with people who want to do good. In the past, you might have just donated to an organization. But now, you can find the actual person you want to help, like little Madden. Madden was born with a rare genetic disorder. He needs surgeries to stay alive, and the costs are overwhelming. “ER visits, medication, he’s on a special formula,”…

Art Beat: Bethel soap sisters hope Native art draws crowd-funding donors

ArXotica, the Bethel-based bath and beauty company that uses materials gathered from the tundra, is trying to boost marketing of its soap outside the region with a crowd-funding quest at a site called Rock the Post. So far that’s a business story; the Daily News has covered the company in the past. What caught our eye were some of the gifts that go to donors at certain levels — like a doll by Francisca Brown of Eek, a grass basket by Agnes Dock, miniature kayaks by Andrew Abyo, men’s dance fans (which for some reason are harder to find than women’s fans), a woman’s headdress…

Brenda Lynn plays with her two-and-a-half year old son, Kaleo… (Ricardo Ramirez Buxeda,…) February 1, 2013|By Walter Pacheco, Orlando Sentinel Brenda Lynn says her autistic 3-year-old son, Kaleo, hardly speaks, and his inability to express himself frustrates him — except when using his speech therapist’s iPad. “The iPad really controlled the tantrums and helped him communicate. I tried to get him one, but I couldn’t afford it on my own,” said the unemployed 39-year-old Orlando mom. “I applied for grants, but I wasn’t lucky enough.” So she turned to Facebook and GoFundMe.com, a so-called crowdfunding website that allows people to solicit cash for personal causes.…

Crowdfunding could give small business a fighting chance

By Joel Freeborn The Security and Exchange Commission must establish regulations to allow entreprenuers collect start-up capital The United States has adopted a financial culture where banks are too big to fail and individuals are too small to succeed. The financial crisis and the consolidation of banking titans made it increasingly difficult for small business owners and hopeful entrepreneurs to obtain the crucial capital for enterprise. Small businesses need a new line of credit, and the solution is crowdfunding. Crowdfunding is “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the…

Crowdfunding 201: A New Model From Seed & Spark

By Lucas McNelly It’s a familiar scene to many filmmakers: they budget out their film, calling in favors left and right, then they launch their crowdfunding campaign and someone sends them an email that says, “Hey, I don’t have any money to give, but I’d love to help.” Invariably, that help can lower the budget. Maybe they have a location you can use for free. Or extra lenses they can loan you. Or they can edit the film for you. Suddenly, you don’t need $X. Only, you still do. Kickstarter doesn’t care that you suddenly found an editor that can knock a chunk off your…
