Crowdfunding sites offer a different way to raise money

The Vampire Movie

Geoff Orlowski wants to take his filmmaking talents to the next level. The Whitesboro resident has been writing and making his own movies — from short films in college to his first feature film that he shot last year in Utica. To get to the next level with his second feature-length movie, though, he needs better equipment. And that means more money. The funds for his first film came straight out of his pocket, and it covered only meals and some equipment, he said. “It’s a sad thing, when you see all the skills that the actors and the crew members have and they’re not…

Barack Obama crowdfunding

Discussion on Tuesday 5th March from 1-3pm to discuss whether crowdfunding could be used to finance your charity campaign Barack Obama raised $137m during his campaign for US presidency by using crowdfunding. This method of fundraising is increasing in popularity in the voluntary sector, and many experts believe that it could provide an excellent source of finance for charities. Sites such as Buzzbnk, Solar Schools and Peoplefund.it allow organisations to raise money for a project online, through multiple donations or loans, from a number of donors, over a short period of time. This allows for more flexibility when donating and offers social loan options. Success…

Crowdfunding Solar Schools In Britain

solar-schools

Schools in the UK wanting to go solar but that are strapped for cash are able to participate in a new crowdfunding service. As was the case in Australia, UK schools were previously able to benefit from generous government incentives to install solar; but most of that support has now dried up and the situation is preventing many schools from accessing solar power. Each school is also provided with a web page on the Solar Schools site to showcase their project and act as a rallying point for fundraising.…

idea me

Over $1 million has been raised via Latin American crowdfunding platform Idea.me since its launch 18 months ago, contributing to the success of 180 creative projects, the startup announced today. As you may remember, we recently listed Idea.me as one of the 10 Latin American startups to look out for in 2013. New Investment Platform Shekra Supports Startups in Egypt

Investment Platform Shekra

New joint investment concept “Shekra” is drawn from the Arabic phrase “sherik fekra” in Arabic, which means “share an idea.” The platform was launched in Cairo last November by seven founders who come from backgrounds in technology, aviation, investment and banking, who have pooled their resources to support Egyptian startups. The platform works by asking its network of investors to offer small amounts of capital in order to fund a startup or a specific project, thus mitigating investment risk. Unlike other crowdfunding platforms like Yomken in Egypt, or crowdsourced investment platforms like Zoomaal, which ask the public to fund projects, Shekra relies on a closed…
