App Makers Crowdfund to Avoid Blindside Hit of FDA Rules

App Makers Crowdfund to Avoid Blindside Hit of FDA Rules

It sounded like a good idea at the time: A smartphone application that tapped into a growing consumer desire to self-diagnose health ailments at home. Biosense Technologies Private Ltd. made a splash in February when it unveiled a kit that lets people use their phone cameras to read subtle color differences on test strips designed to show unhealthy levels of proteins and other substances in their urine. What the creators didn’t anticipate was the need for U.S. government approval. Now Biosense is adjusting to a new reality. After receiving a letter from the Food and Drug Administration questioning the company’s lack of regulatory clearance, Biosense…

Crowdfunding for medical devices hits Web

Here’s a prescription for cash-strapped medical device inventors: Crowdfunding. A new Web company is taking advantage of the trend of Internet-enabled public funding of projects by offering to connect inventors of smaller medical devices from around the world with people who can give them the cash they need to get off the ground. “There are people in many different countries that have bright ideas, and they don’t have the contacts in order to show them,” said Daniel Yachia, co-founder and chief medical officer of the new online crowdfunding company B-a-MedFounder. “If you’re not well-connected to big companies or funding yourselves, it’s very difficult to get…

Crowdfunding Takes On Hunger, Health And Human Rights

Crowdfunding Takes On Hunger, Health And Human Rights

Kickstarter meets Kiva meets TOMS: That’s the idea behind a soon-to-be launched social enterprise and crowdfunding web site by the name of Reciprocity & Co. The basic concept is this: Founded by Gainsville, Fla.-based Sam McPherson, the site promotes projects aimed at addressing major areas of need, like health or human rights abuses. But the way it happens is consumers buy an organic cotton tote bag or backpack for $25, and $5 from those revenues goes to help an organization involved with one of those projects. Example: the Alaska Sudan Medical Project, which is trying to build a school in South Sudan able to supply 400 children with clean…

Crowdfunding Gives Health and Fitness Gadgets a Real Workout

Crowdfunding Gives Health and Fitness Gadgets a Real Workout

Robert Mullins, CFB Sr. Staff Writer In the wearable computer space, Google Glass has generated the buzz, but the Pebble watch has generated results. Pebble Technology had raised $375,000 from a venture capitalist for a wristwatch computer that would share information with a user’s Apple or Android OS smartphone, but was unable to raise more. In April 2012, Pebble signed up with the crowdfunding company Kickstarter and took off. By May of that year, Pebble had raised a total of more than $10 million and by July 4 of this year, it had sold 85,000 units of the $150 watch. Pebble Technology is seen as…

Medical Crowdfunding Attracts Top Silicon Valley Investors

Watsi has become the first charitable company to raise over $1 million in funding from traditional “angel investors” in Silicon Valley. The non-profit had already made history when it received backing from Paul Graham‘s elite Silicon Valley incubator Y Combinator. Graham wrote, “After about 30 seconds of looking at the site, I realized I was looking at one of the more revolutionary things I’d seen the Internet used for.” Watsi — one of the fastest growing non-profits in web history — puts up pictures and profiles of people around the world who need money for medical care. “I think the simplest way to describe Watsi is we are…

Crowdfunding – Fertility treatment and adoption alternatives

The newest industry to gain momentum via crowdfunding platforms is fertility treatments and adoption. Parents are beginning to test the waters and seriously consider crowdfunding as an effective alternative in getting funds to solve issues with infertilities. It was almost unheard of until 2011 when a couple started a campaign to raise money to support their fertility treatments. The project has successfully raised more than $8,000 and Landon Haley is the first baby born by means of crowdfunding. More and more parents are looking for other ways of getting financial aid when it comes to fertility treatments. One of the many reasons is the ever…

Kickstarter: An iPhone Kitchen Thermometer, From the Inventors of Twine

Kickstarter: An iPhone Kitchen Thermometer, From the Inventors of Twine

Of all the ordinary things we can now link up to our smartphones and tablets–watches, scales, cars and even those dumb slabs that serve as our front doors–the humble kitchen thermometer doesn’t seem like an especially exciting candidate. But imagine being able to pore over graphs of botched loaves when trying to perfect the elusive art of at-home bread baking. Or being able to keep an eye on the temperature of a bird in the oven while running to the store to grab some forgotten supply. Or even just being able to monitor its temperature without opening the oven in the first place. That’s the…
