American McGee’s Alice Short Films Funded by Kickstarter

American McGee’s Alice Short Films Funded by Kickstarter

A feature film based on Alice will also be explored thanks to the success. A Kickstarter seeking funding for a short film based on American McGee’s Alice called Alice: Otherlands has concluded, with the $200,000 goal being surpassed in the final 24 hours. Just over $222,000 was raised during the three-week crowdfunding campaign. With the money, American McGee’s company, Spicy Horse, will be able to obtain the film rights to Alice and arrange for a series of short films, among other things, to be created. “[T]he funding will allow us to create a series of animated short films, pursue larger animated series possibilities, begin development work on…

Beyond Kickstarter: Three game devs who crowdfunded on their own

Beyond Kickstarter: Three game devs who crowdfunded on their own

Kickstarter is a big deal for video games. It allows studios to float a concept or prototype directly with fans (and potential future fans), assess whether or not people are willing to pay money for such a project, and bypass publishers all the while. But there are possibilities for crowdfunding outside of platforms such as Kickstarter, too. Numerous studios are having a crack at their own crowdfunding initiatives, ditching Kickstarter in favor of going it alone. With Kickstarter’s architecture already in place, ready and willing to display your funding project, and tested to within an inch of its life by all walks of video games,…

A rare look into crowdfunding in Japan: Interview with video game – Monken – creators

A rare look into crowdfunding in Japan: Interview with video game – Monken – creators

Original Article/Interview from IndieGames: Team Grand Slam, a collection of veteran Japanese developers behind the upcoming free-to-play Monken, recently ran a successful crowdfunding campaign on a Japanese platform called Campfire. They raised just under ¥2.5 million ($25,000 USD) for the development of a game they plan to release under a Creative Commons license. That may not seem like much money compared to the amounts raised by developers like Double Fine and Obsidian, but it’s the largest amount raised for a game on this Japanese crowdfunding site to date. We mentioned this back in March, but Monken is an upcoming free-to-play game in which the player is fighting terrorists – with a crane.…

Robot Kickstarter Project Paints Using Watercolors & Teaches STEM Principles

Robot Kickstarter Project Paints Using Watercolors & Teaches STEM Principles

Super Awesome Sylvia, along with Windell and Lenore from Evil Mad Scientist, are teaming up to bring a watercolor painting robot to Kickstarter. With two motors driving cables to move the head in the x and y directions, the WaterColorBot uses standard watercolor paint and paper to create 9″ x 12″ works of art. This Kickstarter campaign will fund the initial production run of the bots and hopefully give the project worldwide exposure. The robot is already fully developed and has been shown off at Maker Faire.  It also won a silver medal at Robo Games 2013 and starred in the announcement video for the 2013 White House Science Fair. WaterColorBot comes…

New Crowdfunding Film Society bolsters aspiring filmmakers

So you’re all excited about crowdfunding your first/dream/calling-card film project via Kickstarter or IndieGoGo. But you’re not Zach Braff, and you’re definitely not “Veronica Mars.” In fact, once you’ve reached out to all the friends, relatives and colleagues willing to donate some bucks, how on earth are you going to reach and impress the total strangers you might need to make your goal amount (and if you don’t, in most cases, you’ll never see a cent) in the allotted campaign period? The Crowdfunding Film Society may have the answer for that and many other questions about the process. Still in its nascent stages, the organization…

Star Citizen crosses $14 million crowdfunding mark

The first ever crowdfunded triple-A game. Wing Commander designer Chris Roberts’ upcoming space epic Star Citizen has now raised more than US$14 million (AU$15.3 million) via crowdfunding. The money has been gathered using a combination of Kickstarter – where it attracted US$2,134,374 in pledges – and Star Citizen’s official website, where money continues to pour in. “We can hardly believe it – we’ve already hit the $14 million level!” wrote Roberts in an update. “We can’t thank you enough for all of the support you have given Star Citizen in recent months. Rest assured, we will be back at work Monday creating the space game of…

Double Fine Misadventure: First Major Kickstarter Game Hits A Snag

Double Fine Misadventure: First Major Kickstarter Game Hits A Snag

Tim Schafer writes candidly about his game ‘Broken Age’ running out of money, but this is just the nature of the beast. Once upon a time, there was a website designed to crowdfund small, creative projects—a garage band’s new self-recorded album; a short film; a dance video. That website was called Kickstarter. Then, along came Tim Schafer and Double Fine Adventure, the video game now known as Broken Age, which transformed the site into an indie video game crowdfunding platform overnight. Kickstarter termed it the “Blockbuster Effect.” Well, not just a video game funding platform, but these days many of the biggest projects—from the Ouya to Star…

Video game maker successfully crowdfunds over $10 million for project

Video game maker successfully crowdfunds over $10 million for project

Chris Roberts is feeling good. He has persuaded over 150,000 people to kick-in $10 million for a product that doesn’t exist and won’t be completed until the end of 2014. But it’s not the pile of cash that’s lighting him up, not even the opportunity to roll out the game’s full feature-set way earlier than previously budgeted, it’s the vindication this public investment represents. If there’s one thing the world has learned from the various successes and failures of video game crowdfunding — from Roberts’ Star Citizen and Tim Schafer’s Broken Age and Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2, to any number of aborted Kickstarter’s such as Denis Dyack’s Shadow Of The Eternals —…

Intergalactic Kickstarter War Escalates With X-Wing Squadron Project

StarWarsKickstarter

Fear not, sons and daughters of the rebellion! A new Kickstarter project promises to raise enough money to build a squadron of “proton torpedo armed X-Wing fighters” to ward off the impending construction of a crowdfunded Deathstar! At the $10,000 backer level, you’ll even get training by Yoda himself—a steal. Like most of you, I thought it was funny when folks first hijacked the White House’s petition program to ask for a functioning planet killer. I then reveled in the PR acumen displayed by Paul Shawcross, chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, who shrewdly used…

With $7.7M raised via crowdfunding, Chris Roberts makes his sci-fi game in the public eye

Chris Roberts is under a lot of pressure to get Star Citizen right. The new massively multiplayer online sci-fi title from the creator of the legendary Wing Commander sci-fi spaceship combat games raised $7.7 million via crowdfunding on the promise of bringing back the glory days of science fiction combat simulations in a persistent online universe. Roberts scored the money via Kickstarter and his own web site, Roberts Space Industries, for his new company Cloud Imperium Games, where he is chief creative officer. In an interview with GamesBeat at the DICE Summit game conference, Roberts said he is now working in the public eye. And…
