The office of Annual Programs is UC Berkeley’s largest fundraising unit and is responsible for engaging thousands of undergraduate alumni, parents and students as donors to the University each year. The goals of this department are to: 1) increase the number of donors contributing to the campus annually, 2) significantly raise the amount of discretionary funds for the Chancellor, the deans and program directors, and 3) identify potential major donors for the campus.  Programs include the parents program, class campaigns, and direct response marketing. The entire office of Annual Programs is made up of 27 employees and raises $10 to $15 million in private contributions each year.

 

The Direct Response Marketing program is responsible for increasing annual fund results for UC Berkeley’s schools, colleges, and programs by administering the Annual Giving Services Program (AGSP), a comprehensive suite of direct marketing services.

 

The Crowdfunding Project Manager will report to the Director of Direct Response Marketing within the Annual Programs department of University Relations and work closely with an industry leader in crowdfunding. This contract position will oversee the launch of two new online fundraising projects in the University Relations department: a new campus-wide crowdfunding platform and an online “day of giving” campaign.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Under general supervision, plans, develops and implements basic marketing and/or sales plans, strategies and/or events for small or non-complex projects. Serves as project manager for launch of new campus-wide crowdfunding platform in spring 2015 (75% of position), and project manager for day of giving launch in November 2014.

Candidate is the champion for Berkeley crowdfunding and giving day efforts, reaching out to campus partners, guiding them to develop and execute successful fundraising campaigns.

  • Training and Communications Launch

    • Partner with crowdfunding project owners to ensure they are appropriately managing their project to increase chances of success

    • Ensures good customer service to crowdfunding platform users and day of giving campus colleagues, answering questions and explaining basic services and strategies

    • Crowdfunding training includes evaluating potential projects for suitability, and communicating/educating on best practices

    • Coordinates activities, including events and promotional materials and products designed to promote awareness of the department and/or campus services, programs or products within the campus community or to the general public, and crowdfunding services within the campus community and also promotion of day of giving to external community (alumni, parents, donors and friends)

    • Develop internal communications around launch of platform(s)

  • Provides training, communication, and support for crowdfunding /day of giving, including determining content of training/communication materials, and presenting to campus partners

  • Best Practices

    • Benchmarks other university or non-profit programs for best practices in crowdfunding and day of giving campaigns

  • Researches, analyzes, monitors and evaluates marketing and/or fundraising efforts for effectiveness, reporting results to appropriate higher levels of administration

  • Researches and analyzes new and innovative methods for generating revenue through crowdfunding and day of giving campaigns

  • Builds relationships with outside (non-campus affiliated) companies and organizations

  • Marketing Project Management

    • Establishes and manages crowdfunding/day of giving project timelines

    • Coordinates between campus, approved vendors, and industry experts   on all aspects of launch

  • Researches and resolves problems

  • Coordinate meetings and presentations

  • Drafts and/or edits copy for marketing projects or programs such as publications, advertisements, press releases, announcements, et cetera

  • Coordinates design, production and distribution of publications and crowdfunding training module, including internet or web materials, press releases, advertisements, brochures, flyers, signage, A/V presentations, displays, exhibits, et cetera.

  • Establishes and maintains contacts with internal and external marketing professionals and vendors; e.g. artists, designers, photographers, mailing houses, postal service, list brokers, advertising representatives, media contacts, et cetera.

  • Administers marketing budget(s) as assigned, ensuring that budget goals are met; as required meets revenue generating goals through effective relationships with external sources

  • Creates/maintains marketing files, records, calendars, logs and other related documents

  • Evaluate results and make recommendations

  • Organize vendor selection process and work with vendor as needed

  • Operations

    • Coordinate Giving Day operations, including process flows and staffing

  • Document policies and procedures developed by subject matter experts

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required

  • Savvy user of social media, or experience in social media marketing, or advertising

  • 1-2 years experience in social media promotions/marketing

  • Strong relationship building skills

  • Ability to communicate department results and strategies concisely and with confidence

  • Strong team-orientation

  • Ability to respond to changes/shifts in direction with flexibility

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage/coordinate production of projects accurately, economically, and on-time

  • Strong Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills

  • Demonstrated ease with utilizing spreadsheets and other tools

  • Knowledge of customer service standards/procedures

  • Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management

 

Preferred

  • Solid knowledge of online marketing/fundraising principles, concepts, strategies and best practices

  • Crowdfunding experience

  • Day of giving experience

  • Knowledge of the campus including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives and infrastructure

  • Technical understanding of CRM and emerging digital technologies

  • Knowledge of UC Berkeley Development

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
