CrowdFunding boost for cocktails duo NiteOwl

CrowdFunding boost for cocktails duo NiteOwl

By Jo Blakemore A North East company that sells chilled smoking cocktail systems for bars has boosted its global business after turning to crowdfunding website Kickstarter. NiteOwl, founded by Colin Myers and Rob Funder in 2009, developed a bar top machine called JetChill that injects dry ice into the bottom of its drinks glasses to produce two chilled smoking cocktails at a time. But when it couldn’t access enough funding from traditional banks, it launched a Kickstarter campaign which attracted 27 new backers and exceeded its funding target of £25,000, raising £27,149 in just 60 days. “Kickstarter is an excellent high-profile platform and we were…

Equity CrowdFunding eyed for start-ups

By Mike Freeman, Young San Diego companies sometimes bemoan the difficulty of raising investment capital locally, which forces them to court venture firms in hotly competitive Silicon Valley or elsewhere. Can the rise of equity crowd-funding websites give these entrepreneurs an additional avenue to raise money? There’s a movement afoot to find out. At a San Diego Venture Group event this week, former Qualcomm executive Jeff Belk said he’s joined with Israeli crowd-funding firm OurCrowd as a venture partner targeting San Diego companies. Belk’s new venture, Bright Light Management, aims to find and evaluate early stage firms, bringing them to the OurCrowd online platform for…

CrowdFunding Rule Comments Under SEC Review

CrowdFunding Rule Comments Under SEC Review

By RUSS GARLAND,Crowdfunding rules that would let ordinary investors back startups are moving closer to adoption by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Agency staff are just starting their review of comments on a nearly 600-page proposal issued in October to implement a mandate in the 2012 Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act. Comments were due Feb. 3. SEC Chairman Mary Jo White has said that completing the rules are a priority this year. Startups and entrepreneurs, who stand to benefit from greater access to capital, are concerned that the proposed rules would deter smaller companies from using crowdfunding, as The Wall Street Journal reports. A key…

Understanding crowdfunding’s caveats

Understanding crowdfunding’s caveats

BY ROSS RUBIN , Crowdfunding has been a boon to companies that are bringing some of the most exciting and innovative devices to market. But sometimes things go wrong. Last March, the first of a two-part Switched On discussed some of the foibles about crowdfunding in the wake of Kickstarter proclaiming that it was not a store. The column highlighted three products, two of which (the Syre Bluetooth iPod nano watchband and the Jorno folding keyboard) had seen long delays, but still seemed to have hope of shipping. Nearly a year later, neither has. And there is no telling when or if either will. To the credit of…

CrowdFunding & Beer

ByBrian Feldt St. Louis Business Journal, Beer and podcasts mark second chapter for entrepreneur DreamFundMe.com, just months after its initial launch in September, saying users were creating campaigns that were essentially asking for free handouts with little work. CrowdFunding Real Estate In North Texas

CrowdFunding Real Estate In North Texas

BY Lauren Silverman, The crowdfunding trend – where people pool their money to back everything from arts projects to new gadgets – has hit home. Literally. Investors are now pooling their money online to buy real estate. And the first crowdfunded real estate transaction just took place in Dallas. A group of 46 investors now own a 267-unit apartment complex in Mesquite. The complex, called Trinity Place, will soon be re-branded “Park Centre,” that’s centre, c-e-n-t-r-e. New playgrounds are going in, barbecue grills, exterior kitchens, and an upgraded duck pond. A duck pond at the apartment complex in Mesquite, which will be redone now that…

CrowdFunding Economy, just getting started

CrowdFunding Economy, just getting started

By Kyle Chayka, The Internet has broken down a lot of barriers in the world of what we have euphemistically deemed “content creation.” With websites, newsletters, and social media profiles, anyone can publish and promote anything, from blogs to books and feature films. In a perfect world, this means that the usual barriers to entry blockading creative people from reaching a public audience have fallen. But in the wide-open world of digital publishing, we’ve also all become a lot more accustomed to getting our media for free. Such is the dilemma: Getting everything for free from creators who are only rewarded with exposure is unsustainable, but…

3 WAYS TO Socialize CrowdFunding Campaigns

3 WAYS TO Socialize CrowdFunding Campaigns

By: Mandy Cummings, WildRock A surprisingly common myth about crowdfunding is that once you make your project live, affluent beneficiaries will come flocking to fund your idea. In reality, it takes strategy and foresight to seek out the crowds that will be interested and passionate about your cause, and time invested in building that online community, before your campaign launches. A proven way to foster that community and excitement for your project is through effective use of social media. In fact, according to crowdfunding platform Fundable, social media is a critical factor in crowdfunding success, citing that for every order of magnitude increase in Facebook friends (10, 100, 1000),…

Richard Branson on Finding Funding

BY RICHARD BRANSON Editor’s Note: Entrepreneur Richard Branson regularly shares his business experience and advice with readers. Ask him a question and your query might be the inspiration for a future column. Q: I am a social entrepreneur, striving to develop a business in Africa that makes a difference, but my struggle is the same as that of millions of others: finding funding. I come from Denmark, and potential investors always tell me, “The idea is great, but please prove that your business model works first, and then come back.” Should I look abroad for funding instead? — Christian Høegh-Guldberg Hoff, Nairobi, Kenya More and…
