Michigan Governor Signs Intrastate Crowdfunding Exemption

Michigan Governor Signs Intrastate Crowdfunding Exemption

BY Alan McGlade, Forbes Contributor: Yesterday Governor Rick Snyder signed Public Act 264 which establishes an intrastate exemption for crowdfunding in the state of Michigan. This allows Michigan residents to invest in businesses that reside within their state through crowdfunding platforms, essentially circumventing federal regulation. According to Governor Snyder, “This legislation enacts useful reforms that will streamline government procedures and eliminate confusing or unnecessary regulations. What is particularly impressive about P.A. 264 is the speed with which it moved through the legislature and ended up on the Governor’s desk. Republican State Representative Nancy Jenkins, who introduced the legislation, held a hearing before the Michigan House…

Best of 2013: Crowdfunded Projects

By CH Design, Once again, crowdfunding showed no sign of slowing in 2013. While Kickstarter is still top dog in terms of introducing new ideas, traffic to similar sites like Indiegogo and Rally continues to pick up—meaning we may just still be seeing the tip of the iceberg that is the popularity of crowdfunding. Luckily, for every Cabin Sister’s fail that slips through the cracks, there are many more projects deserving of the creative community’s support. So, in the spirit of looking back on 2013, the following are 10 of our favorite crowdfunded projects that caught our attention this past year—from emerging breweries and coffee roasters to design…

Solar Energy & CrowdFunding

Solar Energy & CrowdFunding

By Bret Williams, Non-profits have trouble taking advantage of solar programs. Solar Energy – Crowdfunding Consumers and businesses have been able to take advantage of a growing number of solar energy programs recently. These programs are designed to mitigate the costs associated with the purchase and installation of photovoltaic systems, thereby making them easier to acquire. Non-profit organizations, however, do not typically have access to these programs. Non-profits cannot take advantage of most solar leasing initiatives, power purchase agreements, or financing programs that make the adoption of solar power easier. The solution to this issue may be somewhat straightforward and may take the form of…

10 Fun Facts About CrowdFunding

10 Fun Facts About CrowdFunding

BY PUNIT ARORA , While crowdfunding is older than the Statue of Liberty in New York — which incidentally needed crowdfunding from the American and French people — the advent of web 2.0 and internet-mediated platforms has caused crowdfunding to gain a lot of traction in the last few years. Industry estimates indicate that crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter and IndieGoGo funded over a million projects with more than $2.7 billion in 2012, an increase of 81 percent over 2011. The most successful examples of crowdfunding ventures include video game Star Citizen, smartphone Ubuntu Edge and smartwatch Pebble.   If you are considering joining the ranks of these successful crowdfunded ventures, here are 10 fun facts…

Angels Distance from Crowdfunding in 2014 ?

Angels Distance from Crowdfunding in 2014 ?

ByJeff Draa, There’s certainly been a lot of uncertainty in the angel and venture capital arenas over the past decade, and understandably so. Add to that, the lure of crowdfunding—a nearly $3 billion business in 2012—and it’s led some angel groups to consider if there is a role for individual investors in crowdfunding their deals. My advice to my colleagues: There could be, but stay on the sidelines for at least another year. Why? For starters, it’s unclear how crowdfunding will affect company valuations. The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, requires startups to publically disclose a laundry list of items if they choose to…

Be the change with crowd-funding

Be the change with crowd-funding

by: Carolanne Wright, Instead of turning to big banks, the government or credit cards, creative entrepreneurs and environmental activists are using the power of numbers to realize their dreams. Enter crowd-funding. By tapping into networks of individuals, small donations finance worthy projects, businesses and ideas—even civic overhauls. And people are making a difference without breaking the bank. Many times, projects and businesses that need capital are overly ‘alternative’ and unable to attract the attention of banks or do not fit the rigid qualifying terms of government aid. Who wants to contend with outrageous debt and interest rates anyway? A unique solution to this dilemma is…

Crowd Funding Could Make the Self Storage Industry Popular with Small Investors

Crowd Funding Could Make the Self Storage Industry Popular with Small Investors

By Kim Kilpatrick, December 30, 2013 11:36 PM The Beatles and Joe Cocker made the notion of getting by with a little help from their friends into a hit song. You could even say the concept applies between the two since Joe Cocker had to get a little help (permission) from the Beatles to record his version of the song. That kind of cooperation is a concept that worked well for the music industry then, and certainly is one that can work for the self storage industry now. When most people think of the investing in the self storage industry they—well, they don’t unless they…

CrowdFunding success stories of 2013

CrowdFunding success stories of 2013

BY KATIE COLLINS, it’s been an important and formative year for crowdfunding platforms Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Not only has awareness about crowdfunding as a means of fundraising grown exponentially, but we’ve started to ask questions about how and why they should be used. One example of this is the debate over whether established names and celebrities who could theoretically secure backing elsewhere deserve our support on these platforms. The UK version of Kickstarter has been up and running for just over a year now and Indiegogo has proven particularly popular as a platform for projects likely to have an international appeal. The films, games and products that have been…
