Omate TrueSmart watch beats Kickstarter goal in a day

omateAs Samsung prepares for its long-anticipated smartwatch launch, New York-based Omate has smashed the funding target for its own TrueSmart wrist-mounted device.

Omate Truesmart, a water-resistant smartwatch with a built-in 5-megapixel camera, reached its $100,000 (£63,700) crowdfunding target in less than one day, and has now raised more than double its original goal, with $232,317 (£149,000) pledged and 28 days of the campaign remaining.

Most of the smartwatches launched to date have been intended as Bluetooth companion accessories to a smartphone, but TrueSmart claims to be “a new generation of Smartwatch 2.0,” operating both independently from the smartphone, thanks to its 3G capabilities, and as a companion via Bluetooth or WiFi.

TrueSmart has a 1.54-inch touchscreen display and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. It features a 1.3GHz dual core processor, a 600 mAh battery with up to 100 hours standby time, and its own speaker and microphone. The device is encased in a metal body with a watertight seal, and charging connectors are also waterproof, meaning it doesn’t have to be removed for showers or swimming.

Omate claims that the device will be used for voice calls, text messaging, social media messaging, sports apps, tracking, SOS device, GPS navigation, gesture control, voice control, voice-to-text, weather, music player, world clock functions, calendar alarms and voice notes.

“Our Omate TrueSmart follows you wherever you go, even to places you wouldn’t have thought of bringing your phone – swimming, beach, jogging, clubbing, hiking and more,” the New York-based founders state on the watch’s Kickstarter page.

The Omate TrueSmart is expected to sell for $299 (£190). While its batch of $179 early-bird specials have already sold out, backers can still get discounts on the gadget, and for a $189 pledge interested backers can take advantage of a second early bird special. Omate plans to ship the first watches to customers in October.

omate2The news comes ahead of the much-anticipated launch of a smartwatch from Samsung. The South Korean firm has confirmed it is working on the product and has filed patents for possible designs. A launch date has not yet been announced, but Samsung’s next scheduled event is at Berlin’s IFA consumer tech show in two weeks’ time.

Meanwhile the Pebble smartwatch, which secured a record $10.2 million using Kickstarter last year, revealed in July that it had received about 275,000 pre-orders for its device. The $150 device has since gone on sale at Best Buy stores in the US.

Generator Research predicts that worldwide shipments of smartwatches in 2014 will be in the region of 8.9 million units, with shipments in 2018 reaching 2014 million units. However, it says that these figures could be conservative.
