Kickstarter Launches in Canada

People based in Canada can now build Kickstarter projects, the crowdfunding platform announced Monday.

To begin, Canadian users must click on the site’s “Start a new project” button and select “Canada” in the drop-down list, according to a blog post. Projects will open to the public starting Sept. 9.

“We thought the month-long gap would give everyone plenty of time to build and tweak their projects before launching,” the post said.

Canada-based Kickstarter projects will function in the exact same way as those in the U.S. and UK — including all-or-nothing funding and rewards — with one exception. Pledges will be processed through a third-party payments system, and backers of Canadian projects must enter their payment information directly on Kickstarter. (Creators in the U.S. must sign up for an Amazon Payments account.) For details on Canadian payment-processing fees, check out Kickstarter’s Q&A.

While funding goals for Canadian projects will be listed in Canadian dollars, there is no Canada-specific Kickstarter site. The projects be included alongside all other U.S.- and UK-based creations.

Kickstarter, which first announced its plans for a Canadian launch in late June, decided to open up north after getting “a lot of requests from people in Canada,” a company spokesperson toldMashable. He added that “expanding into other territories is priority,” but declined to name which countries Kickstarter is targeting next.

The New-York based company first launched exclusively for U.S.-based projects in 2009, although backers worldwide were able to donate funding. Kickstarter then opened to creators in the UK last October.

Canadian readers, are you excited that Kickstarter has opened in Canada? Will you use the platform?
