Michael Eisner on Kickstarter: ‘I Think It’s Only Positive’

Michael Eisner on Kickstarter: ‘I Think It’s Only Positive’

Kickstarter may be popular among producers of the maker variety. But what about producers of a more traditional strain — say, Hollywood producers? And record companies? And movie studios? During a discussion with Kickstarter co-founder Perry Chen at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Walter Isaacson asked Michael Eisner, who was watching the discussion from the audience, what he thinks of the crowdfunding service. The former Walt Disney Company CEO, Isaacson pointed out, made a living helping to build up artistic projects in the same way Kickstarter does — but he did so through a studio system whose model is pretty much the opposite of crowdfunding. So what…

Using crowdfunding sites could destroy a nascent business idea

Using crowdfunding sites could destroy a nascent business idea

Before using crowdfunding sites, businesses need to protect their intellectual property from copycat imitations Entrepreneurs are increasingly using crowdfunding platforms to pitch their ideas to a wide audience in the hope of getting potential investors to contribute finance. Yet, for certain ideas, pitching on crowdfunding platforms could be fatal to setting up a viable business Crowdfunding sites such as kickstarter have grown in popularity. The concept is....

Is SmoothGroove the Most Unusal Product to Attract Crowd Funding?

It may be unusual, but it is real, and it's creating a storm worldwide. Susan Laurie from North East England (founder & CEO of SmoothGroove) always preferred to wear figure-hugging clothes that showed her shape off to the full. Making the Movie Was Easy, Crowdfunding Is Hard

Making the Movie Was Easy, Crowdfunding Is Hard

Making the movie was easy, crowdfunding is hard. Ok, that’s a ridiculous oversimplification, but not completely untrue. I’m currently in the midst of a crowdfunding campaign to raise post-production funds for my first feature film, Sidewalk Traffic (a comedy/drama about a struggling filmmaker and new father in post-Great Recession NYC), which I wrote, co-produced and directed this past winter. Realizing the lifelong ambition of directing my first feature film meant making a substantial financial investment (though well short of what an MFA at an elite film school costs), informing my wife and two young daughters that I would be for all intents and purposes gone for the better…

New generation of entrepreneurs turn to crowd funding to raise capital

Oceanside resident Jessica Lewis is among a new generation of entrepreneurs turning to crowd funding platforms such as Indiegogo.com to raise capital for new business ventures. She hopes to generate enough donations to expand her online “Rockabilly” women’s clothing store to a brick-and-mortar venue on South Coast Highway. Courtesy photo

OCEANSIDE — Jessica Lewis needs $110,000 to realize her dream of opening a women’s “Rockabilly” clothing store on South Coast Highway. It is the natural extension of a successful online store, darlingdames.com, where she carries the Too Fast, Lowbrow Art Company and Sourpuss labels. “I grew up in Texas and started wearing Rockabilly when I was 15 or 16,” she recalled. “It’s really big there and is truly for all generations. “The 1950s were a fun and romantic time. I’ve had several customers from their 50s to their 60s look at my clothing line and say, ‘Oh, my gosh! I remember that dress!’” Lewis is…

Infrastructure Is Huge Challenge For Crowdfunders

A couple of weeks ago I took at look at the future of self-publishing and as I was writing it became clear that there are a lot of parallels with the future of crowdfunding. Like self-publishing, crowdfunding needs a reliable infrastructure to support project owners, but where self-publishing can tap into existing professional communities, there isn’t a similar eco-system of businesses that provide services to the crowdfunding community. Self-publishing’s advantage is that there is already a flourishing network of author services companies and freelances who are doing for traditional publishers exactly the same kind of work that self-publishers need, in almost exactly the same kind…

SeedInvest Raises $1M To Help Angels Invest Online–Privately

Courtesy of SeedInvest SeedInvest CEO Ryan Feit, right, with SeedInvest adviser Sherwood “Woodie” Neiss during a trip to Washington to meet with bankers and regulators, believes his crowdfunding platform can help streamline investing.

A crowdfunding platform called SeedInvest is betting that investors want a little privacy as they review and back promising startups online. The site recently rolled out SeedInvest Groups, a feature that lets managers of angel groups invite members to review deals and fund companies without doing so in the view of industry onlookers. Privacy features like this could help curb the “herd mentality” that often plagues investing, suggests Ryan Feit, the chief executive of SeedInvest. Investors and entrepreneurs discussed this issue at the Premoney.co conference in San Francisco this week. Serial entrepreneur Elad Gil observed that equity crowdfunding sites, along with accelerators and affiliated seed…

Kickstarter plans to “open up” crowdfunding site to projects in Canada

The crowdfunding website Kickstarter says it “will open up to Canada-based projects later this summer.”

The crowdfunding website Kickstarter says it “will open up to Canada-based projects later this summer.” The U.S. company made the announcement today (June 27) on its Twitter account, but provided few other details. Launched in 2009, Kickstarter is a popular online-fundraising tool for people behind creative projects in technology, music, games, and other fields. Financial pledges are solicited for individual projects, which then receive the funding if they reach their dollar-amount goal by a set deadline. Guidelines listed on the Kickstarter website indicate projects can be launched by “US and UK creators over the age of 18.” Rules for those in Canada are not mentioned.…

Not every crowd has a silver lining

When Daylin Paul came across the woman, he knew he had a story he had to tell. The photographer was travelling in Thailand after leaving his job at a South African newspaper group. The woman, known as Maw — Paul won’t divulge her real name — is a member of the Karen tribe, living in a village in the northern mountains. She had contracted HIV, which carries a huge social stigma in the area. Paul wanted to document her life in photographs. But he had a problem. He needed money for travel costs, equipment and a bike to get up into the hills from his…
