Political Crowdfunding: Building a Community Instead of a Campaign

By Anum Yoon, Crowdfund Beat Media Guest Editor, Throughout the past few years, crowdfunding has become a source of fundraising for charities, life-saving surgeries, new products, individual travel goals, research projects and more. With crowdfunding platforms and social media, it’s easier than ever to set up a page where friends and family can donate to whatever it is you’re passionate about or need money for. But does this new fundraising fad have a place in politics? Politicians who are starting campaigns or building platforms need money, and it’s a fairly new possibility that this money could come from small individual donations from people on crowdfunding…

Targeted IRRs in Crowdfunding

By Mark Roderick CrowdFunding Beat  Sr. contributing editor and crowdfunding attorney with Flaster/Greenberg PC.   Targeted internal rate of return, or IRR, is used widely to advertise deals on Crowdfunding sites, real estate and otherwise. While target IRR means something to sophisticated sponsors and investors, its widespread and uncritical use makes me a little uneasy, for the following reasons: If pressed, many people don’t know what IRR really means. Investors assume that a higher IRR is better than a lower IRR, but many couldn’t explain exactly why or how. IRR can be misleading. For example, a bond purchased for $100 that pays interest of $10 at the end…

The rise in crowd-investing

By Adi Gaskell , CrowdFundBeat Guest Contributor Editor, Crowdfunding has been expanding at quite a pace in recent years, but whilst I suspect most of you are familiar with the likes of Kickstarter, there is a slightly more serious form of the art growing in popularity. Since President Obama passed the JOBS Act in 2012 there has been a steady growth in crowd-investment platforms.  Whereas Kickstarter et al might reward backers with a freebie or some other gift associated with the project, with crowd-investing platforms, the return is more akin to that associated with traditional investments. I’ve written previously about investment platforms for real estate in…

Community Banking, The Crowd and CrowdFunding

By Steven Cinelli, CrowdFunding Beat  Sr. Editor, CEO PRIMARQ/REMARQ Personally, I have enjoyed the whitepaper series on community banking and its positioning and potential opportunities by aligning with the “crowd space”.  I believe the biggest takeaway for members of community banking industry is that “times continue to change” and the fundamental principles, practices and disciplines of banking have shifted so new models need be pursued for not only profitability but survival.   Let’s assess the banking industry.  In 1985, there were over 14,000 banks in the US.  Now, in 2014, we have less than 7000.  And it wasn’t the big banks that have failed.  In 2012,…
