Web ad killer AdBlock launches crowdfunding initiative

AdBlock, the company behind the AdBlock Chrome extension that block out Internet advertising, is going meta after it launched a crowdfunding initiative to raise a minimum of $25,000 for an advertising campaign of its own. AdBlock has launched a 30 day donation push to finance a promotional campaign that will use the very medium that it restricts: Web ads. “We’re going to use ads to get rid of ads,” the campaign page explains. “We will use the money raised to make AdBlock banner ads and video commercials, and we will show these across the Internet to people who don’t have AdBlock.” The donation page quietly went live this weekend…

Crowdtilt creates customizable open-source crowdfunding platform

Crowdtilt creates customizable open-source crowdfunding platform

Thanks to the JOBS Act and the rise of Kickstarter, Indiegogo and the parade of startups that have emerged in their wake, crowdfunding has gone mainstream. However, according to the minds behind Crowdtilt — the Y Combinator-incubated platform that caters to the many types of “group fundraising” that fall outside the purview of Kickstarter — this is just Phase One. The Crowdfunding Era is just beginning. While the Kickstarters and Indiegogos continue to dominate headlines in the crowdfunding space, a growing set of niche platforms have emerged to handle the spillover from projects that don’t fit under the traditional umbrella. And some are bypassing platforms altogether: Star Citizen,…

Crowdfunding Gives Health and Fitness Gadgets a Real Workout

Crowdfunding Gives Health and Fitness Gadgets a Real Workout

Robert Mullins, CFB Sr. Staff Writer In the wearable computer space, Google Glass has generated the buzz, but the Pebble watch has generated results. Pebble Technology had raised $375,000 from a venture capitalist for a wristwatch computer that would share information with a user’s Apple or Android OS smartphone, but was unable to raise more. In April 2012, Pebble signed up with the crowdfunding company Kickstarter and took off. By May of that year, Pebble had raised a total of more than $10 million and by July 4 of this year, it had sold 85,000 units of the $150 watch. Pebble Technology is seen as…

Braff hit his $2 million target for the film after only five days back in April, through fan donations A groom-to-be has proposed to his new fiance, with help from – among others – actor and film director Zach Braff. The plan was hatched when Matt Hulbert donated to the Kickstarter campaign for Braff’s upcoming film, Wish I Was Here. In return, he managed to get the Scrubs star to introduce a video which he would then show his girlfriend, Janice. The video also included video messages from the couple’s friends and family, encouraging her to say yes. Writing beneath the video online, Mr Hulbert said: “I wanted…

Crowdinvestment takes off in the Middle East: Dubai startup raises equity capital on Eureecaa

It’s 10am in Nabbesh’s offices in Dubai. The team is a bit speechless. “We’re at 29%,” someone says excitedly. Founder Loulou Khazen sounds surprised. Yesterday, at the same time, Nabbesh, a skill exchange platform based in Dubai, debuted the first equity crowdfunding campaign on Eureeca, an equity crowdfunding platform, since it went live last month. Crowdinvestment won’t be the startup’s only source of capital, as the startup is currently negotiating a series A round with institutional investors and business angels. Yet Khazen and her team decided to try to raise US $100,000, for a total equity stake of 6.67%, from the crowd, as a test. “Crowdfunding was always something…
