Who is Crowdfunding a Hotel?

Who is Crowdfunding a Hotel?

When we think of “crowdfunding” we usually associate it with throwing in a few bucks to support our friends’ short films or art projects. Lucky, then, that we’re not friends with Rodrigo Niño, CEO of New York real-estate company, Prodigy Network, because he’s looking to raise $31 million in equity for his company’s hotel project: $100,000 at a time. Prodigy Network actually have a successful track record at this novel approach to hotel development: they previously raised $171 million in $20,000 increments for a mixed-use skyscraper development that is currently under way in Bogotá, Colombia. The project aims to convert an apartment building at 17…

Betaworks embraces crowdfunding with syndicate seed investment

Betaworks embraces crowdfunding with syndicate seed investment

Today, the U.S. government quietly lifted the general solicitation ban to make good on a provision of the JOBS Act. Now, it is legal to gain startup money from “crowdfunding” techniques — and Betaworks has announced in a blog post that it will seize the opportunity to make syndicate seed investments available for its Openbeta initiative. Openbeta initially opened as a transparency platform — enabling users to test out new products, leave feedback, and learn about the companies that Betaworks is building even before launch. Now, Openbeta users will also be able to invest in these companies alongside Betaworks during funding periods. It’s an auspicious…

New crowdfunding platform targets Drupal development

New crowdfunding platform targets Drupal development

A new crowdfunding platform – Drupalfund – is intended to make it easier to contribute to Drupal and accelerate development work on the open source content platform, according to Jozef Toth. Toth, a co-founder of Drupalfund and the CEO of Slovakia-based Web development agency Mogdesign.eu, said that a large portion of Drupal development has been based on individuals and companies donating time and money to the CMS. “The majority of this development, even core development, is done during developers’ free time, even in many cases cutting into time that could be spent on paid work,” Toth said. “While this generosity is laudable, it still means…

IBM’s Internal Crowdfunding Rewards Employee Innovation

IBM’s Internal Crowdfunding Rewards Employee Innovation

All employees have ideas, credible or otherwise, on how to improve their job environment. Very few, however, get an allowance and an opportunity to act on their thoughts. At most highly structured and hierarchical enterprises, the prospect of such an initiative seems far off. At IBM, however, several departments have already tested a program that puts employees in the middle of the ideation process. The internal crowdfunding initiative was first jointly implemented during summer 2012 at a New York state IBM research office and an office in Cambridge, says Michael Muller, researcher and master innovator at IBM who helped to manage the program. Since then,…

Crowdfunding can help startup businesses get to market faster

Crowdfunding can help startup businesses get to market faster

Entrepreneur Paul Chipperton aims to raise $129,000 by the end of October for marketing a technology that can suspend the arrival of distracting emails, text messages and phone calls to handheld and other devices. But he’s leaving this fundraising to online, not to the banks or venture capital. In a growing movement called crowdfunding, entrepreneurs make video pitches to consumers to help get their projects to market. It all comes down to whether the amount of donations meet the startup company’s funding target and deadline. Chipperton is putting his MyFocus Solution product on the U.S.-based crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, which launched in Canada earlier this month.…

Bountysource CEO talks open source crowdfunding and bounties for developers

Bountysource CEO talks open source crowdfunding and bounties for developers

Nearly a decade ago, two friends set out to create a full project management platform for open source software called Bountysource. The year was 2004 and the friends were Warren Konkel and David Rappo, and their vision included creating code repositories, file hosting, issue tracking, and bounty support. The pair spent a few months building out the basic features, but then other projects and jobs got in the way. Konkel went on to become the first hire at LivingSocial and Rappo was working as a producer on video games like Guitar Hero, Transformers, and Skylanders. The friends reconnected late last year and the timing seemed…

Star Citizen hits $19 million in crowdfunding, Salvage mechanic detailed for $21 million

Star Citizen hits $19 million in crowdfunding, Salvage mechanic detailed for $21 million

Roberts Space Industries have revealed that Star Citizen has now blitzed across the $19 million line. $19 million unlocks new space stations across the galaxy, which players must fight over to own and manage. It also unlocks monthly installments of the RSI Museum as well as a “Jane’s Fighting Ships”-style manual free to all pledgers. The crowd-funded space sim now has its sights set on $20 million, which will unlock planetary FPS combat. The stretch goal for $21 million has been detailed: a new Salvage mechanic. “Salvage isn’t an aside: it’s a career, with its own mechanic, story tie-ins and universe-shaping endgames,” says RSI. “Search…

Crowdfunding becomes crowd-developing with Big Viking Games’ Tiny Kingdoms

Crowdfunding becomes crowd-developing with Big Viking Games’ Tiny Kingdoms

Who wants a free t-shirt or a measly “Thank You” note in the game credits for your hard-earned pledging dollars, when you could become a part of the actual development team yourself? Well that’s precisely what Big Viking Games has in mind, as the studio’s new Kickstarter campaign for their free-to-play RPG adventure game Tiny Kingdoms is truly a first of its kind: in bypassing the usual reward packages of Kickstarter projects, and instead offering backers to play a direct role in the actual production of the game! Characters, environments, items, features, and tactical game modes are just a few of the areas where Tiny…

James Pond Franchise to Return With Crowdfunding Campaign

James Pond Franchise to Return With Crowdfunding Campaign

Gamers of a certain age may remember the original James Pond, which graced a number of platforms including the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis; the sequel James Pond 2: Codename RoboCod has also been ported a lot, including a DS version in 2005. At its peak in the ’90s the series was quite a hit in pop culture, with various cameos joining the main games in boosting its appeal. Aside from all those re-releases of the sequel, the franchise has been largely quiet, barring a poorly received iOS game in 2011. That’s set to change, however, with developer Gameware now picking up the license and…

HWTrek Gives Hardware Innovators Realistic Production

HWTrek Gives Hardware Innovators Realistic Production

If you’re hesitant to invest in cool gadget pitches on crowdfunding platforms, your instincts are valid. Research shows that only a quarter of Kickstarter pitches in the technology and design categories were delivered on time, and even after an eight-month delay, 75 percent of projects with reached goals then delivered. Better late than never, we suppose? Hardware innovators now have another option. Today marks the official launch of HWTrek, a crowdfunding platform tailored specifically for hardware innovators that not only links them with a community of experts for consultations before crowdfunding but connects them with viable manufacturers afterward so the promised product can be successfully…

Crowdtilt Goes Mobile With First App

Crowdtilt Goes Mobile With First App

As we’ve discussed before, thanks to a handful of names, including Kickstarter and Indiegogo and the gaggle of startups that have emerged in their wake, crowdfunding is on the “Big screen.” Yet, the team behind Crowdtilt — also known as the Y Combinator-backed startup building a “group fundraising” platform for projects that don’t work on Kickstarter — believe that this is just the beginning. The Kickstarters and Indiegogos have owned most of the headlines about crowdfunding, but there’s more and more spillover from projects that don’t fit, with many bypassing platforms altogether. That’s why Crowdtilt launched Crowdhoster last month — an open-source, customizable crowdfunding platform…

Raising Money For Startups & Getting A Jump On The Government

Raising Money For Startups & Getting A Jump On The Government

If you’re mixing social enterprise and regulatory change, the watchword is patience. Just ask Sang Lee. When the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS) was passed last year,  Lee was as excited as anyone else who saw the potential for social enterprise startups to be able to tap a new source of financing–equity crowdfunding from both accredited and non-accredited investors. But he also knew, even after it became official, real implementation wouldn’t happen overnight. In fact, the former investment banker started his own social enterprise, New York-based Return on Change, an online funding platform for-profit high-impact startups–that includes cleantech and social enterprises, among others–in 2011, well before it…
