Crowdfunding offers alternative to traditional investments

Crowdfunding websites offer anyone the chance to be an armchair ‘Dragon’ – from backing a start-up business to supporting a musical Share. Perhaps you’re looking for something that will give you a better return than a savings account. Maybe you fancy emulating the likes of Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne by becoming “an armchair Dragon” and investing in a fledgling business that you think has the potential to grow. Or perhaps you would like to do something good for your community, such as chipping in a few pounds towards solar panels for your children’s primary school, or to support a vital local amenity. Alternatively, you…

Churches & Ministries Bank on New Funding Trend

May 4th - World Give Day

May 4th is World Give Day to increase volunteer work and charitable giving to the causes of the world and is encouraging Churches and Ministries to prepare to use the newest trend in fundraising—crowdfunding. “The bank’s cash is constipated for both profit and not-for-profit businesses.” said Connie Jay, an author and trainer on crowdfunding. Crowdfunding is the collective effort of people who network and pool their money and other resources together to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. These supported efforts can be anything from disaster relief and non-profit support or startup companies seeking funds. “Crowdfunding is the people’s funding solution.” she said.…

New crowdfunding platform Dreamstarter aims for socially-minded start-ups

Entrepreneurs with a social mission are the target of a new crowdfunding platform called Dreamstarter, created by a partnership between ING Direct and StartSomeGood.

Entrepreneurs with a social mission are the target of a new crowdfunding platform called Dreamstarter, created by a partnership between ING Direct and StartSomeGood. StartSomeGood, launched last year by Tom Dawkins, is a crowdfunding platform for social innovation. Dawkins has described it as “Kickstarter but for social change”. And it seems the platform is living up to its name, launching a new initiative called Dreamstarter in partnership with financial services firm ING Direct in a bid to boost Australia’s social enterprise sector. Much like StartSomeGood, Dreamstarter enables Australian entrepreneurs to raise funds for social change projects, chosen by the Dreamstarter panel. The panel, which will…

Taking the Capitol Hill Crowdfund to the next level: making the neighborhood better

__ "A Capitol Hill Tool Library? We’d invest in that."

For a few weeks now, CHS has featured Capitol Hill-related projects seeking funding via “crowdsourcing” services like Kickstarter. You can check out our Capitol Hill Crowdfund here. The Atlantic points us to Chicago where the city has rolled out an experiment in social funding that goes to an even deeper neighborhood level: Maybe, though, there is a less glamorous role for Kickstarter, and sites like it, to play in cities, not necessarily funding high-tech park architecture or the latest pop-up fad… but simply supporting small businesses and programs that create jobs. The city of Chicago this week is attempting this idea, rolling out a curated…

Top Trends Entrepreneurs Should Watch This Year

As an Internet entrepreneur, making accurate predictions for the coming year can be tricky: It’s a market space prone to rapid change and relentless innovation. However there are three areas I’m convinced will take center stage: Crowdfunding and Alternative Lending With crowdfunding estimated to hit a mind-blowing $500 billion dollars this year, we’re only going to see more alternative startup financing become accepted staples, from peer-to-peer lending and investor associations to revenue based financing and of course the impact of a growing pool of angel investors. Investment trends started by companies like the Dell Innovators Credit Fund and Google Ventures (where those who invested in…

Crowdfunding Success Stories Include $35,000 for Sock Monkeys and $2,000 for a Dry Composting Toilet

Social entrepreneurs of all varieties are turning to crowdfunding to launch or expand their social efforts; recently I’ve connected with five who have shared their stories of how they raised up to $100,000 each. Do Good Bus Tour, Las Vegas Rescue Mission Rebecca Pontius led the effort for an organization called the Do Good Bus to raise $100,000 on StartSomeGood to show people how to volunteer by taking them on a bus to volunteer all around the country. She said, “A friend and I had been volunteering in LA for the past ten years at a couple different organizations and consistently had friends ask, ‘How…
