Star Citizen $64 million in CrowdFunding

A number of crowdfunding campaigns have raised substantial sums over the past year or two, including$10 million for the Pebble watch and $13 million for the Coolest cooler. But the Star Citizen space-simulator game has raised so much from fans of creator Chris Roberts that it makes both of those look like a child’s lemonade stand — this week, the team behind the game announced that it had crossed the $63 million mark, and the money is still rolling in. Star Citizen began with a Kickstarter campaign almost exactly two years ago, in November of 2012, a campaign that initially sought to raise $500,000 and wound up raising more…

Crowdfunding Business

CrowdFunding Beat News Wire,  A colorful ecosystem is evolving around the investment crowdfunding industry. Companies are developing products and services to alleviate nearly every conceivable pain point of the system’s stakeholders, including businesses (supply), platforms (infrastructure) and investors (demand). In some cases products are being designed from the bottom-up to solve new and unique challenges crowdinvesting markets present. Take Asurvest, for example: it’s structuring an insurance product to cover crowdfunded securities. Insurance products have long existed in other industries but Asurevest is the first, to my knowledge, to go after early-stage private securities. Another great example is CrowdCheck, a company building out a holistic portfolio of products…

Star Citizen’s Crowdfunding surges past $44 million

Star Citizen’s Crowdfunding surges past $44 million

By Owen S. Good, Over the past three weeks, Star Citizen added another million dollars to its world-record crowdfunding total, bringing the combined backing to $44 million. The anticipated release of the space combat simulator’s dogfighting module by the end of this month is likely behind the surge. Star Citizen’s funding reached $43 million on April 28 and stood at $42 million on April 15. It is by far the highest-crowdfunded video game project ever, even considering the recent history of this segment, with more than 450,000 individual backers. Of the $44 million raised, $34 million of it has come since June 2013. The project…

Crowdfunding’s latest celebrity success: Shaq

Crowdfunding’s latest celebrity success: Shaq

Sarah Chandler | CNBC | May 2, 2014 – you’re old enough to have wasted massive amounts of time playing Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis video games in the 1990s–– before Xbox and PlayStation became household names––you might have chanced upon Shaq-Fu. Widely considered to be one of the worst video games of all time, it is also the only game that can brag of a website devoted solely to the destruction of every copy. Aside from its wildly uneven ratings, Shaq-Fu’s original 1994 release drew attention for another notable fact: The game’s creator and star was Shaquille O’Neal, at the time a new NBA…

The surprising acquisition…When Crowdfunding multi-billion-dollar company about to be owned by Facebook

Victor Luckerson| March 26, 2014 | Time – When Carlos Schulte contributed $300 on Kickstarter to an ambitious project called the Oculus Rift, he never expected this day to come. It’s doubtful anyone did—Oculus VR, the company behind the virtual reality headset, was only asking for $250,000 in its crowdfunding campaign during the summer of 2012. Back then, it was a scrappy startup with a small but passionate base of supporters. Now, it’s a multi-billion-dollar company about to be owned by Facebook. The surprising acquisition announcement Tuesday left many of Oculus’s original backers stunned, and a bit disappointed. “I felt a little used, I guess,”…

CrowdFunding more than $400,000 a week for realistically proportioned doll.

BY JTA, Jewish artist’s ‘anti-Barbie’ becomes crowdfunding sensation  NEW YORK — Almost exactly 55 years after Barbie made her debut at the American International Toy Fair, a more realistically proportioned alternative to the iconic fashion doll has become a crowdfunding sensation, raising more than $400,000 in a week and a half to begin production. The Lammily doll, which has joints that bend, an athletic physique and a motto of  “Average is Beautiful,” is being described by some fans as the anti-Barbie. But Lammily’s creator, 25-year-old Pittsburgh artist Nickolay Lamm – who, like Barbie’s late inventor, Ruth Handler, is Jewish — insists he is not trying…

Crowdfunding spotlights innovations ripe for parent support

Crowdfunding spotlights innovations ripe for parent support

Lisa Suhay | March 11, 2014 CS Monitor – In less than a week since launching his crowdfunding campaign, Nickolay Lamm has raised 407 percent of his original $95,000 goal to create “Lammily,” an “average Barbie” built to look like teens today. His campaign shows the shift of marketing power back into the hands of parents, who can fund the toys and products they want to see for their kids. It seems to me that consumers have given toy makers a time out, with a warning that if they don’t put on their listening ears when it comes to the kinds of toys we want…

Kid-Coding Robots Maker Play-i Earns $8M in Funding

STEPHANIE MLOT | MARCH 4, 2014 | PCMag – California startup Play-i has raised $8 million to bring code-teaching robots Bo and Yana to life. California startup Play-i has raised $8 million to bring code-teaching robots Bo and Yana to life. The company had already crowdsourced $1 million late last year, garnering almost 11,000 pre-orders for the robots aimed at kindergarteners. This time around, Play-i worked with investors Madrona Venture Group and Charles River Ventures to help “bring learning and play to millions of children around the world,” Play-i’s June Lin wrote in a blog post. “Your contribution to our crowdfunding campaign will go directly…
