‘Babylon 5′ Feature Film Reboot Will Not Rely On Crowdfunding

‘Babylon 5′ Feature Film Reboot Will Not Rely On Crowdfunding

By Patrick Munn, Last week, TVWise reported that Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczysnki had announced plans at San Diego Comic Con for a feature film reboot of the sci-fi series. Stracyzysnki will pen the film next year for a projected 2016 production start date. JMS also stated that he hopes to use actors from the series in new roles for the feature film and, thanks to his deal with the studio from the 1990s which saw him retain the feature film rights, he will be making the film regardless of whether or not Warner Bros chooses to get on board. But with the news…

IdeasTap Launches Accelerator: Commission-Free Crowdfunding For Creative People

IdeasTap Launches Accelerator: Commission-Free Crowdfunding For Creative People

Clyde Smith | HypeBot | Aug 4, 2014 – IdeasTap is an “arts charity” or nonprofit based in London that supports young creatives with funding, networking tools and information. To further their mission they launched a commission-free crowdfunding platform with “Cash TopUp Funds” for outstanding projects. However Accelerator is for UK residents only and that’s unlikely to change given the UK focus of IdeasTap. According to the Accelerator launch announcement, Peter De Haan founded IdeasTap in 2008: “in response to the first of the arts funding cuts, to empower young creative people through opportunities, seed funding, arts jobs and career development.” This mix is evident…

6 Keys to a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

6 Keys to a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

Emily Best | BackStage | July 21, 2014 – So far, we’ve covered how to begin to engage your community (long before you think of crowdfunding!) and everything you need to consider leading up to the launch of a campaign. But let’s talk about execution and aftermath. Crowdfunding, like filmmaking, is won and lost in the prep. That said, you can’t just take a campaign live and hope everyone flocks to it. Each day requires careful maintenance, and the name of the game is momentum. Each day your campaign updates, emails and social media posts should be telling the world you’re that much closer to…

Crowdfunding Gets More Crowded

Crowdfunding Gets More Crowded

By Sean J. Miller, A new crowdfunding website targeting indie filmmakers wants to lure projects in development with the promise of online promotion and other services. Filmmakers can already partner with established sites such as Indiegogo (with whom Backstage has a partnership) or Kickstarter to crowdfund their campaigns. In fact, the latter’s reach will be felt this summer when Zach Braff’s “Wish I Was Here” opens in theaters: The feature received more than $3.1 million in funding from 46,520 supporters through Kickstarter. Edward Panos, who co-founded IndieFilmFunding.com with his niece, Stephanie Lee Panos, said that those existing crowdfunding platforms have too broad of a focus.…

The Crowdfunding Upstart That’s Turning Freelancers Into Superstars

The Crowdfunding Upstart That’s Turning Freelancers Into Superstars

BY LAURA HUDSON , Cara Ellison always felt like something was missing. Although the Scottish videogame critic was an established writer at multiple websites and magazines about games, she had long tired of superficial press junkets and canned press releases. She wanted to do the sort of long-form, embedded journalism with game creators that she saw in music and film, to spend days or even weeks with the creators she thought were making fascinating, important games—even if they weren’t big-budget, mainstream titles—and dig into what made those people tick. The problem was, no one wanted to run it. “There was just no place for it,”…

Crowdfunding Site Hosts Big Names – Hanks Film Among First Projects

Jordan Zakarin | March 26, 2014 | TheWrap – Junction is only open to wealthier investors, and says its projects will be released with or without them Soon, wealthy movie fans will be able to get more than a digital download and a T shirt for investing in films online. The new Junction — which is already raising money for films with Tom Hanks, among others — isn’t a Kickstarter-type site that helps movies get made. Instead, it will allow investors to contribute to films that already have financially backing and will be made regardless of whether Junction participants join in. One of its first…
