Chris Roberts and Cloud Imperium Games have earned $37 million through a crowdfunding campaign. Years ago, Roberts’ developed Wing Commander and Privateer. Star Citizen is officially the most funded crowdfunding project in history.
Star Citizen is scheduled to be released in 2015, which means there is still quite a wait, but supporters are excited and willing to wait. According to Gamespot, the campaign surpassed their goal passed solely on their reputation and anticipation within the gaming community. They did little to promote the campaign outside the gaming community.
The $37 million was raised through over 367,000 backers. The developers have set a new stretch goal of $39 million. When the new goal is reached, the developers will unlock the final system, which is currently being voted on. Fans can choose between Lost Human Colony, Tevarin Ghost World or Xi’An Science Outpost.
The game is going to go through a modular release, so a basic version will be released, and then new features will be added as the funding is made available. This will encourage ongoing financial support for the game above and beyond the crowdfunding efforts.
Although $37 million is a great deal of money, it is on par with the cost of developing comparable games. Beyond: Two Souls released in 2013, cost $27 million to develop. L.A. Noire cost $50 million to develop in 2011.
Star Citizen is one of the many success stories of crowdfunding, and an example of how campaigns can surpass their goals when they get a strong enough following. It also demonstrates the importance of building excitement around a project. The release of this game and the ongoing release of new features have effective built a great deal of anticipation.
Research has shown the long-term benefits of crowdfunding success. This campaign may not only lead to future sales, but also increased investments and the potential for increased employment. Additionally, the ROI on this project is likely significantly higher than the $813 per hour average.
