While familiar television shows and well-known actors have been stealing the Kickstarter spotlight in recent months, crowdfunding has also given life to more niche properties — and now one of last year’s most successful animated projects has an official release date.Dick Figures: The Movie, which be released online on September 17th, is a 73-minute film based upon the popular online web series created by Ed Skudder and Zack Keller. It follows the story of two stick figures — named Red and Blue — on a series of goofy comedic adventures, with a heavy emphasis on frenetic action, memes, and dubstep.
The project launched in May of last year with an initial goal of $250,000, with which the creative team estimated it could turn out a 30-minute project (the Dick Figures shorts, which have garnered some 350 million collective views on YouTube, usually run between two to four minutes). Funding over the initial goal would have let them stretch the running time. The project ended up collecting over $313,000 — making it the highest-funded animated Kickstarter project at the time — and allowed the team to turn out a much longer project than they’d originally anticipated. While backers of the Kickstarter project will receive a download, Mondo Media is planning a broader online distribution plan that it promises will incorporate ad-supported as well as for-pay viewing options. In the meantime, check out the new trailer below.
