Adam Corolla doesn’t pull punches about the kinds of folks you have to go to to get a Hollywood movie made.
“Most of those guys are idiots and they’re pompous and they make crap,” said the podcast king and former star of The Man Showand Loveline. “I got tired of dealing with these idiots.”
Instead, he’s taken to Donald Trump-connected crowdfunding site FundAnything to raise money for Road Hard, the movie he wants to make about down-on-their-luck comics.
“Instead of begging these idiots…I thought, let’s just take it to the people,” he said.
And so far, he’s had success, raising $665,300 of the $1 million he’s shooting for, with 26 days left in the campaign.
Corolla’s campaign is the first of its kind for two-month-old FundAnything, both in its ambition and in the fact that it’s the first celebrity-driven campaign on the site. But Bill Zanker, the site’s founder, said it won’t be the last.
“We want to use all of our celebrity connections,” said Zanker, who founded Learning Annex before teaming with Trump on FundAnything.
His site is meant to allow anyone to ask the crowd for money for anything, and celebrity campaigns, he argues, are a great way to get the word out about crowdfunding.
“We believe that only 6 percent of North Americans know what crowdfunding is,” said Zanker. “We’re using celebrities to help everybody. That’s what we’re doing here.”
Zanker believes this will help drive ordinary people to use the site to raise money for their own projects, startups and causes. “It’s just the beginning,” he said.
